Nine incredible days. Two historic cities. One unforgettable journey that opened hearts, minds, and passports.

What happens when you take a group of curious students, a passion for global exploration, and a love for STEAM education, then bring them to the heart of one of the world’s oldest civilizations?

You get something like this: dumplings and drum towers, forbidden palaces and friendly strangers, fast trains and even faster friendships. You get the CFI and Marian Catholic Spring Break China Experience—a once-in-a-lifetime journey across Beijing and Xi’an that no one will soon forget.

“Traveling to China was a rare and valuable opportunity to experience a different culture firsthand,” said Oliver Owens, a student from Marian Catholic High School. “I’m so grateful for the memories and the deeper understanding I gained of another way of life.”

The adventure began with a long-haul flight and a whirlwind layover in Korea. According to Oliver, it “flew by thanks to an excellent selection of movies, delicious food, and outstanding service.” Once the group touched down in Beijing, they were swept up in a cultural immersion filled with warmth, wonder, and memorable moments.

From Tiananmen Square to the Temple of Heaven, every step carried centuries of history. Students practiced Tai Chi alongside locals, walked the vibrant shopping streets, and learned the stories behind ancient emperors and iconic structures.

“The Great Wall was breathtaking,” one student shared. “Standing on something that’s over 2,000 years old made me realize just how big the world, and history, really is.”

But the trip wasn’t just about sightseeing. It was about connection. Locals smiled and waved, with some even asking for selfies with the students. Food became a cultural bridge, with each meal offering something new to try. Dumplings, seafood, and even Beijing duck made their way to students’ plates.

“Every meal was exceptional,” Oliver recalled. “I ate delicious dumplings, pork, seafood, rice, and even tried duck for the first time.”

Midway through the journey, the group traveled to Xi’an aboard a high-speed train, experiencing firsthand the impressive scale and speed of China’s rail system. There, they explored the legendary Terracotta Warriors, wandered the Muslim Quarter, and walked along the ancient city walls that once protected emperors and poets.

They also had the chance to try on traditional Han Dynasty costumes, bringing history to life in a unique and hands-on way.

Lights, laughter, and late-night shopping. An unforgettable evening in the heart of China’s local culture.

As the trip came to a close, students returned to Beijing for one final day of exploration. They rode rickshaws through historic Hutong alleys, learned to play the traditional Chinese yoyo, and put their bargain skills to the test at a bustling market. The farewell dinner was filled with laughter, stories, and a shared sense that this journey had changed them in ways they were still discovering.

“From the start, China felt incredibly welcoming,” Oliver said. “It was truly phenomenal and unforgettable.”
