Do You Really NEED That? Finance 101 Helps Kids Make Smart Money Choices!

"If you had $10, would you spend it on ice cream or save it for a new bike?" 🧐

That was just one of the fun questions that sparked big financial debates at our first Finance 101 for Kids lesson, hosted by Everest Lighthouse and CFI Robotics! Led by host David Liang and speaker Judy Xue, young learners jumped into a world of money smarts, decision-making, and financial fun.

The lesson kicked off with a game where students had to decide: Is this item a need or a want? 🚦

🛏 A bed? ✅ NEED

🍕 Pizza every night? ❌ WANT

🎮 A new video game? ❌ WANT

👕 Clothes for school? ✅ NEED

Some answers were easy, but others made students think twice about what they REALLY need! 💭

💡 “If we already have clothes, do we really need new ones?”

💡 “Is a phone a need or a want? What if you need it for school?”

These thoughtful discussions helped students understand how to make smart financial decisions—an important skill that will help them as they grow!

Saving vs. Investing: What’s the Difference?

Next, students learned about saving and investing—two important ways to manage money.

💰 Saving = Keeping your money safe in a piggy bank or bank account for future use.

📈 Investing = Putting your money to work so it grows over time (like planting a seed and watching it grow into a tree!).

“If you put $10 in your piggy bank today, how much will you have next year?” 🤔

🎯 Answer: Still $10!

But if you invest that $10 wisely, it could grow into more! 🌱💰
