LEGO Science Grades 3–5: Creativity Meets Engineering

CFI Admin Team
Sep 30, 2025
From erupting volcanoes to dinosaur robots with organs, students in LEGO Science Grades 3–5 are learning how to combine science, engineering, and imagination. Every Saturday, the CFI Robotics Center is alive with students testing their designs, solving challenges, and celebrating their discoveries.
Robots, Dinosaurs, and Science in Motion
This class gives students the chance to explore science concepts while building LEGO robots that model real-world systems. Each week brings a new challenge that blends creativity with technical skill.
Highlights so far have included:
Dinosaur Anatomy Models: Students built robotic dinosaurs with 3D printed skeleton frames and added clay to represent organs, learning about structure and function in living things.
Volcanoes: Students made their own erupting volcanoes and paired them with robotic “alert systems” that modeled how scientists monitor natural events.
Catapult Challenge: Students built catapults both with LEGO kits and 3D printed materials, then tested how far they could launch. The distance contest was filled with cheers and competition as designs were put to the test.
Crossing the Gorge: Robots faced the challenge of spanning a four-inch gap, teaching students about stability, balance, and problem-solving under pressure.
Every project connects to science in a hands-on way, helping students see how robotics can be used to understand and model the world around them.
Building Skills That Last
Students are not only building robots but also building confidence. They are learning how to:
Design models that explain science concepts
Test their ideas and adjust when something does not work
Compete in friendly challenges with creativity and perseverance
Work both independently and in teams to reach a goal
These lessons give students the foundation for future STEM learning while keeping class fun, engaging, and memorable.
Looking Ahead
With several weeks still to go, students will continue designing robots and science models that push their creativity further. From engineering challenges to hands-on experiments, the remainder of the class promises even more opportunities to learn through play and discovery.
