LEGO Science K–2: Big Discoveries for Small Scientists

CFI Admin Team
Sep 29, 2025
Robots, volcanoes, and even homemade lava lamps. Our youngest learners in LEGO Science K–2 are discovering how science and engineering come together in exciting, hands-on ways. Each Saturday at the CFI Robotics Center, students are exploring real-world science while building robots that bring those ideas to life.
Science in Action
Every week, students dive into a new experiment that connects science concepts with LEGO robotics. Instead of just hearing about how something works, they are building models and testing ideas for themselves.
Some of the highlights so far include:
Lava Lamps: Students mixed oil, water, and fizzing tablets to make glowing lava lamps.
Volcanoes: After creating their own erupting volcanoes, students designed robotic “alert systems” to warn when an eruption might occur.
Crossing the Gorge: Students faced the challenge of building a robot that could cross a four inch gap, testing different designs and cheering when their creations made it across.
Robot Hands: To learn how joints and levers work, students built paper models of a human hand and then created robotic hands to pick up objects.
Each project mixes science, creativity, and play, giving students a chance to see that STEM is something they can touch and explore.
Building Curiosity and Confidence
This class is more than just experiments. Students are developing important early skills like:
Asking scientific questions
Testing their ideas and making improvements
Working together in small groups
Learning how robots can model real-world systems
Even at this young age, they are practicing engineering thinking while having fun. It is the perfect foundation for future robotics and science learning.
Looking Ahead
With a few weeks still to go, students will continue building new robots and experimenting with fresh science challenges. From exploring energy to testing structures, the remainder of the session promises more excitement and more discoveries.
