From coral reef construction to underwater robotics, our campers explored the wonders of the ocean through hands-on projects, teamwork, and imagination.

A Week Beneath the Waves

Ocean Exploration Camp 2025 invited students to become scientists, engineers, and storytellers of the sea. Over five days, campers explored the mysteries of our oceans, learned about marine ecosystems, and created projects that connected art, science, and technology. Every day brought a new mix of learning, building, and discovery, all tied together by the spirit of curiosity and teamwork.

Setting Sail on Day One

The week began with introductions and the creation of “explorer mascots” using custom LEGO minifigures. These mascots appeared throughout the week in projects and displays, adding a personal touch to the adventure.

Campers learned the importance of keeping an explorer logbook, recording observations just like real scientists. They then connected myth to science by hearing the tale of Jason and the Argonauts and linking it to modern ocean research technology.

Hands-on building quickly followed, with activities that explored ship design, propulsion, and accuracy in a fun and playful way. The day ended with students constructing small rubber-band-powered boats, testing their designs, and making adjustments for better performance.

Coral Reefs, Creatures, and Conservation

Day two brought a deep dive into the world of coral reefs and the life they support. Campers created large-scale coral reef models using crafting materials, each one colorful, detailed, and scientifically inspired.

Every student selected a marine animal to research for the rest of the week, learning about its habitat, adaptations, and role in the ecosystem. These “deep dive” projects grew into polished presentations for the final day.

In Minecraft, campers designed virtual fish farms and aquariums, applying environmental sustainability concepts in a creative digital space. The day also included the start of a large LEGO Titanic build and the exciting launch of brine shrimp hatcheries, giving campers a chance to observe living creatures up close.

From Riverbanks to Robotics

Midweek activities brought together engineering, art, and science. Campers sculpted marine animals from air-dry clay, adding them to their reef models for personality and realism. They tested local water samples, both in the lab and at the nearby Chicago River, recording results in their logbooks.

Students continued their work on the Titanic model and began a special ROV (remotely operated vehicle) challenge. Using LEGO motors and creative building techniques, they designed small vehicles capable of maneuvering through a simulated underwater cave system.

Finishing Touches and Final Preparations

As the week moved forward, campers painted their clay creatures, completed their coral reefs, and prepared permanent homes for their brine shrimp. They refined their ROV designs, improved steering and flexibility, and ran final practice runs for the demonstrations.

The Titanic build progressed further, Minecraft creations expanded into complex underwater facilities, and research notes were polished. Even during breaks, campers stayed engaged, with chess games becoming a favorite way to relax and connect.

A Finale Full of Adventure

The last day of Ocean Exploration Camp was filled with energy and anticipation. Campers spent the morning finalizing their projects and building their presentations. In small groups, they practiced explaining their research, demonstrating their builds, and answering questions.

By the time presentations began, the confidence and knowledge on display was inspiring. From detailed explanations of coral reef structures to creative ROV designs and thoughtful animal research, every student impressed with their hard work and creativity. The final presentations truly blew us all away.
