Young developers explored 3D modeling, scripting, and game design in a free weeklong online camp proudly sponsored by the Mei Family.
Game Development from the Ground Up
This summer, middle school students from across the community logged on to the CFI Robotics Online Academy for an exciting journey into game creation with Roblox Studio Summer Camp. Over five immersive days, students learned how games are built from scratch, from shaping virtual worlds and coding interactive features to publishing their very own playable experiences.
The free camp, proudly sponsored by the Mei Family, gave students the tools and confidence to move from players to creators. Guided by instructor Thomas Mei, participants discovered how engineering, coding, and design come together to create the games they love.
Designing Worlds and Building Skills
The camp kicked off with an introduction to Roblox Studio and the essential tools used by game developers. Students quickly moved from navigating the interface to creating and customizing 3D environments. They learned how to design and manipulate virtual objects, build terrain, and control camera perspectives to bring their ideas to life.
With the basics mastered, students took on the challenge of scripting. Using Lua, Roblox’s coding language, they created game elements that reacted to player actions, like platforms that disappear, obstacles that reset players, and checkpoints that track progress. These interactive features transformed their projects from static builds into playable games.
Bringing Games to Life
As the week progressed, students deepened their understanding of how games function behind the scenes. They explored how data can be saved between play sessions, how client and server scripts work together, and how user interfaces make gameplay more dynamic and fun. The final day focused on polishing their creations, debugging scripts, adding visual effects, and preparing their games to be shared and played online.
The results were incredible. Each student finished the camp with a working obby-style game they had designed and coded themselves. Along the way, they gained real-world programming skills, confidence in problem-solving, and a deeper appreciation for the creative and technical side of game development.
A Big Thank You
This program was offered free to the community thanks to the generous support of the Mei Family, whose sponsorship helps us continue expanding access to high-quality STEAM education. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Thomas Mei for his passion and expertise in leading the camp and inspiring the next generation of creators.
At CFI, we believe learning should be hands-on, creative, and fun, and this camp was the perfect example of that. We cannot wait to see the games our students build next.
