Robotics for Competitions Prep: Training the Next Generation of Competitors

Every Sunday at the CFI Robotics Center, students in Robotics for Competitions Prep are building the skills they will need to shine in FIRST LEGO League and other competitive robotics programs. This class is designed to give students a strong foundation in building, coding, and strategy while preparing them for the teamwork and problem-solving that competitions demand.
Learning the Essentials
The course begins with the basics of building reliable robots and understanding the key parts that make them work. From there, students gradually layer in new coding concepts and start to see how sensors, motors, and attachments all connect to create robots that can complete complex challenges.
More Than Just Building Robots
While students are learning how to create competition-ready designs, they are also practicing skills that go far beyond the robotics table:
How to approach challenges with creativity and persistence
How to work as part of a team to solve problems
How to test ideas, refine them, and celebrate progress
The focus is on building confidence and creating a space where students can practice real competition skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Looking Ahead
As the class continues, students will test their robots in practice challenges, try different strategies, and prepare for a final showcase where families will be able to see their progress. The program provides a taste of the excitement of competition while giving students tools they can use in school, tournaments, and beyond.
