Students, Volunteers, and Community Partners Help Shape the Future of Illinois Youth Robotics
The energy inside the RoboSumo arena this year was unlike anything we have seen before.
At the 2026 Illinois 4-H State Robotics Competition, students from across Illinois stepped into the ring to test their robots, their strategies, and their teamwork in one of the most exciting youth robotics competitions in the state. What started as a growing side attraction over the past few years has now become an official part of the Illinois 4-H robotics experience, and this year’s championship proved that RoboSumo is here to stay.
Hosted at the Interstate Center in Bloomington, Illinois, the event brought together creativity, engineering, problem-solving, and competition in an unforgettable day of robotics. This year featured more than 45 RoboSumo teams, making it the largest Illinois 4-H RoboSumo competition field yet. Students competed in high-energy head-to-head matches where every movement, design choice, and split-second decision mattered.
A Competition Built Around Engineering and Iteration
URC RoboSumo is more than just pushing robots around a ring. It teaches students how to design, test, improve, and adapt under pressure. Every round becomes a learning experience as teams return to rethink strategy and prepare for the next challenge.
This year’s competition began with Battle Card qualifying rounds. Throughout the day, teams challenged opponents, built records, and fought for a place in the championship bracket. The top 16 teams advanced into a double-elimination tournament where students battled for the state title.

Making the final bracket was a huge accomplishment in such a competitive field and showed how much the level of student engineering and driving skill continues to grow each year.

State Champions Crowned
After an intense championship bracket filled with close matches, creative strategies, and exciting robot battles, Team Jayden and Isaías earned the title of 2026 URC RoboSumo State Champions. Their robot performance, smart driving, and consistency throughout the tournament helped secure the top spot.
Final standings included:
1st Place — Jayden & Isaías
2nd Place — Cole
3rd Place — Max
4th Place — Jack
5th Place — David
6th Place — Sen-Da
Every student who competed helped make this one of the strongest RoboSumo championships Illinois has seen yet.

Building Robotics Across Illinois
This year’s event also highlighted the growing partnership between CFI Robotics NFP and the University of Illinois Extension 4-H. Together, the organizations are helping expand robotics opportunities for students across the state through competitions, showcases, and hands-on STEM learning experiences.
The momentum for the state event was already building the week before at the Illinois 4-H Robotics Showcase at the College of Lake County, where students and families had the chance to experience URC RoboSumo up close. The showcase helped introduce even more students to robotics competition and brought new excitement heading into the state championship.
CFI Robotics NFP is also excited about the future of Illinois youth robotics. Looking ahead, the robotics side of the competition will continue expanding with table missions, RoboSumo, and Pathfinder line-follow competitions, while University of Illinois Extension 4-H continues leading the eSports side of the event. The goal is simple: create more ways for students across Illinois to learn, compete, and grow through STEM.

Thank You to Our Volunteers
Events like this do not happen without incredible volunteers and community support.
A huge thank you goes out to Brian W., Jayden, Isaias, Jack, John, Luke, Merlin, and Tracey for helping make the competition possible. Volunteers assisted with registration, setup, match flow, student support, and all of the behind-the-scenes work that kept the event running smoothly throughout the day.
Special thanks to Ms. Tracey, who welcomed students and families at the registration table with enthusiasm, encouragement, and positivity from the moment teams arrived. Her energy helped set the tone for an exciting and welcoming competition environment.
The success of URC RoboSumo is only possible because of the students, families, volunteers, and community partners who continue supporting robotics education across Illinois.
The Future Is Bright
The 2026 Illinois 4-H State Robotics Competition showed how much robotics in Illinois is growing. RoboSumo has evolved from a fun side activity into a major competition experience that allows students to develop engineering skills, teamwork, resilience, and confidence.
Most importantly, it showed what happens when students are given a space to build, experiment, compete, and learn together.
CFI Robotics NFP is proud of every student who stepped into the ring this year, and we cannot wait to continue building the future of youth robotics alongside the University of Illinois Extension 4-H and communities across the state.
The future of Illinois robotics is just getting started.
